At Villa Chanticleer, I get to talk with couples at one of the most exciting stages of wedding planning: choosing where they’re going to get married.

And while finding the right venue is obviously a huge part of that decision, I always encourage couples to think beyond the wedding day itself. Where will your guests stay? What will they do while they’re here? Is it easy to get to? Can everyone find accommodations that fit their budget? And, most importantly, does the destination feel like you?

That’s one of the reasons I love helping couples get married here in Healdsburg.

Healdsburg has all the beauty and romance you expect from a California Wine Country wedding, but it also has something that can be harder to find: a genuine small-town feel. It’s welcoming, walkable and full of things to do, while still being surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Sonoma County.

And from my experience helping couples plan their celebrations at Villa Chanticleer, it’s an incredible place to turn your wedding into an entire weekend.

Here are a few reasons why.

Your Guests Get a Wine Country Getaway, Not Just a Wedding

One of my favorite things about a Healdsburg wedding is that your guests get an experience out of the trip, too.

Downtown Healdsburg is centered around the Plaza, where you’ll find tasting rooms, restaurants, boutiques, cafés, galleries and plenty of places to grab a drink and spend an afternoon. Just outside of town, you’re surrounded by wineries, vineyards, hiking, cycling, the Russian River and beautiful drives through Wine Country.

Healdsburg also sits near three incredible wine regions: Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley. Your guests could spend several days exploring and still only scratch the surface.

That makes it so easy to build a full wedding weekend.

Maybe everyone meets downtown for drinks on Friday night. Your guests spend Saturday morning grabbing coffee, shopping or wine tasting before the wedding. Then you reconnect on Sunday for brunch, a winery visit or a relaxed afternoon by the river.

There’s enough to do that you don’t have to plan every minute for your guests — which, trust me, is one less thing you need on your wedding planning list!

Villa Chanticleer Is Less Than Two Miles From Downtown Healdsburg

This is one of the things I always love pointing out when couples first come to tour the Villa.

When you arrive at Villa Chanticleer, you feel tucked away.

We’re surrounded by beautiful mature trees on Fitch Mountain, and the property has that peaceful, private feeling couples are often looking for in a Wine Country wedding venue.

But then I get to tell them: downtown Healdsburg is less than two miles away.

That proximity is a huge advantage when you’re planning a wedding weekend. Your guests can stay near the Plaza, explore downtown during their free time and still be just a few minutes from the celebration.

You get the feeling of being away from it all without actually being far away from everything.

There Are Accommodations for Different Budgets

This is something I think couples sometimes overlook when choosing a destination.

Healdsburg has some incredible hotels, resorts, inns and vacation rentals, but your guests don’t necessarily have to stay right downtown.

One of the benefits of our location is how many other Sonoma County communities are nearby.

Windsor is just south of Healdsburg, Santa Rosa is a little farther down Highway 101, and Geyserville and Cloverdale are both north of us. That gives your guests a much wider range of accommodations and price points to choose from.

Some guests may want to make a vacation out of it and stay at a beautiful Healdsburg resort. Others may prefer a more budget-friendly hotel in Windsor or Santa Rosa.

Having those choices nearby can make a big difference, especially when you’re inviting guests with different travel budgets.

Healdsburg Is Surprisingly Easy to Get To

When couples hear “Wine Country destination wedding,” they sometimes assume their guests are going to have a complicated journey to get here.

Luckily, Healdsburg is very accessible.

Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport is only about 10 miles away, which can be an incredibly convenient option for guests flying into Sonoma County.

San Francisco International Airport is also roughly 80–90 miles away, giving guests another major airport option. Once they’re here, Highway 101 makes traveling between Healdsburg and the surrounding Sonoma County communities relatively straightforward.

For guests coming from the Bay Area, getting to Healdsburg also feels like the beginning of the getaway. You leave the city behind and suddenly you’re driving through rolling hills, vineyards and Wine Country.

The Weather Gives You So Many Options

Weather is always part of the conversation when you’re planning a wedding, especially if you’ve been dreaming about an outdoor ceremony.

Healdsburg’s warm, dry summers and beautiful shoulder seasons make outdoor celebrations especially popular here.

Spring is green and fresh, summer brings long sunny days, and fall is one of my favorite times in Wine Country because harvest is happening all around us and the landscape begins to change.

And one of my biggest pieces of advice as a venue professional? Even when you’re dreaming of an outdoor wedding, choose a venue where you’ll still love your backup plan.

At Villa Chanticleer, couples can have their ceremony outside in our garden surrounded by towering trees and then move inside for dinner and dancing. Having both indoor and outdoor spaces gives you flexibility throughout the year — and a little extra peace of mind when you’re watching that weather forecast!

You Don’t Have to Get Married at a Winery to Have a Wine Country Wedding

This one might be a little biased, but hear me out!

When couples start searching for a Sonoma County wedding venue, wineries are often the first thing that comes to mind.

But there are so many ways to have a Wine Country wedding.

At Villa Chanticleer, instead of vineyard rows, you’re surrounded by towering oaks and redwoods, historic architecture and a garden ceremony setting. The Villa itself dates back to 1910 and has been part of the Healdsburg community for generations.

You still have incredible wineries in every direction — your guests can spend the entire weekend exploring them — but your actual wedding gets to have a completely different atmosphere.

For couples who love Wine Country but want something with a little more history, privacy and personality, I think that’s really special.

Healdsburg Has That Small-Town Magic

This may be my favorite reason of all.

Healdsburg is a destination, but it doesn’t feel like a big destination city.

It’s the kind of place where your guests might run into each other while getting coffee in the morning, see another group from the wedding while walking around the Plaza or end up at the same tasting room in the afternoon.

And suddenly your wedding starts to feel bigger than the ceremony and reception.

Everyone is experiencing the weekend together.

That’s something I hear couples talk about again and again — they don’t just want a beautiful wedding. They want time with their people.

Choosing a smaller Wine Country town like Healdsburg naturally creates more of those moments.

There Is So Much to Do Beyond Wine Tasting

Of course, we love our wine here. But I always remind couples that their guests definitely don’t have to be wine lovers to enjoy a weekend in Healdsburg.

There’s incredible food, boutique shopping, art galleries, hiking, cycling, golf, kayaking and the Russian River. Guests can explore the surrounding countryside, spend a slow morning around the Plaza or make the short drive to one of the neighboring Sonoma County towns.

That variety is especially helpful when you’re bringing together different generations, interests and personalities for a wedding.

Your adventurous friends can get outside. Your foodies can start making restaurant reservations. Your wine lovers will have more tasting rooms than they could possibly visit. And the people who simply want to relax can grab a coffee and wander around downtown.

Everyone gets to create their own version of a Healdsburg weekend.

My Advice? Think About Where You Want Your Wedding Memories to Begin

When you’re choosing where to get married, it’s easy to focus entirely on the venue.

And yes, finding a venue you love matters!

But after working with so many couples, I think the place surrounding your venue matters, too.

Your memories aren’t only going to be from the moment you walk down the aisle.

They’re going to be from the welcome drinks the night before. The coffee run with your bridesmaids. Seeing family members walking around town. Your guests coming back from wine tasting with stories. The brunch the morning after. And all those little moments that happen when everyone you love comes together in one place.

That’s why I think Healdsburg is such a special place to get married.

You get the beauty of Sonoma County Wine Country, incredible food and wine, gorgeous weather and endless things for your guests to do — but you also get the warmth and charm of a small town.
